Records to gather before a sale

Selling your home? Start gathering these records

If you are considering a sale, organising your records now can make the tax review easier.

Gather:

  • The closing statement from your original purchase.

  • Records of major improvements.

  • The dates you and your spouse each lived in the home.

  • Details of any rental or business use.

  • Information about any previous home sale for which you claimed an exclusion.

After the sale, keep the final closing statement and any Form 1099-S you receive.

Please send private documents and questions through your secure portal. Let us know about a planned sale before closing so we can review the relevant dates and circumstances.
